It’s What You Do That Defines You

When Bruce Wayne passed by his old girlfriend Rachel in a hotel, he was with a couple of other girls but he tried to make her understand that telling ‘this is not who I am, beneath me there is more.’ Hearing this Rachel said ‘Bruce deep down you may still be that great kid you used to be, but its not who you are underneath, its what you do that defines you.’ These words always inspired Bruce Wayne, the Batman, to work for others and for the larger good.

Though the words were in a movie, it was a message to all of us, all of us who merely think to do good but never initiate it. What harm will it be to do good to someone, to help someone? We merely watch the world unfold while we pass by never making an attempt to change it that one bit. The old clichéd dialogue that actions speak louder than words still is the ultimate truth of this world. We all make promises, we all promise a better world but very few work to fulfil that promise. Why not do good rather than criticise, why not be good rather than being as rude or bad as the other person.

The fact is that every person on planet earth wants to be good, and I would not be afraid of saying that even Osama Bin Laden wishes to be good, he believes that what he did was for the good but the fact is that its his action, the fact that he killed so many innocent people makes him the biggest criminal on the face of the earth today. Everyone aspires to be good, but what good is it if it is more harmful than helpful. Even a small step for the good can start a large movement for the same cause. And the history has left us many examples of people who worked silently and in turn became true greats. Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela etc are some of the prime examples of people who believed in action, an action for the good. Yes they faced personal problems, yes they were not the idealistic persons in their personal life but when it came to doing good, they never went back on their path. Besides history, in practical world of today too, haven’t we seen that people who work, who do good to others regardless of the outcome have turn out to be heroes. Barrack Obama, Mother Teresa and many others have shown kindness, have shown the world that good still exists we just need to stand up for it.

We see so much hatred in today’s world, people fighting over smallest of matters and amidst all these don’t we love that one moment in a day when a person says some kind word or passes a warm smile. How much does it take to pass a smile or just say a few kind words? We all are running an unknown path today where we forget that there still exists an innocent world for whom there is so much to be done. We may not like all the people but it does us no harm to work for them if that results in the larger good. Why not bring out what’s within all of us and use it to at least a minimal part of our resources to give people what they want. People build orphanages, old age homes, temples as a small token to the society. Maybe they aren’t the best people in the world but by doing some stuff for the society they get that one bit satisfaction that they have done some good, at least a start.

Remember if you think wrong but don’t do it, you are good; on the other hand if you try to do good and are not successful in completing it you are still good.
